Transfer Taxes & Rebate Programs

Several cities impose their own city real property transfer tax which is included as a part of your non-recurring closing costs.   You may have a portion of your transfer tax rebated to you for qualifying seismic work.  For information on the Berkeley and Oakland Transfer Tax Rebate Programs, please refer below.

Below is a list of the current transfer tax rates for each city; rates shown below are per thousand dollars of value are: 

Alameda County
Alameda $5.40 (increase to $12.00 Dec. 12, 2008)
Albany $11.50
Berkeley $15.00
Hayward $4.50
Oakland $15.00
Piedmont $13.00
San Leandro $6.00

Contra Costa County
Richmond $7.00
San Pablo $7.00
El Cerrito $7.00
