The City of Piedmont is quite small with about 11,000 residents. Piedmont is home to some of the grandest and most stately homes on this side of the bay, many of which are architecturally and historically significant. In the early 1900’s the hills of Piedmont were home to some very notable people, such as Jack London and Xavier Martinez. Within Piedmont’s 1.7 square-mile area there are five city parks and numerous landscaped areas which offer wooded paths, tennis courts, children’s playgrounds and picnic facilities.
The Piedmont Avenue business district runs between MacArthur Boulevard and Pleasant Valley Avenue in Oakland. Block for block, it may be the most interesting and eclectic district in Oakland. There are many wonderful one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants that a simple drive down the avenue does not even begin to reveal. There are also interesting shops just half a block off Piedmont on several side streets. To date, the sprinkling of chain establishments has been easy enough to ignore.
People who live in the surrounding neighborhoods come to the avenue almost every day to shop, eat, go to the movies or enjoy coffee or tea.
One of my favorite spots is Fenton’s Creamery. For 114 years Fenton’s has been serving generations of families from all over the nation. My favorite is the Saddleback Brownie with a banana. Mmmmm!
