It does make a twisted sense to be keeping these home off the market, but it is so sad that this is the result of people losing their homes. Many people and institutions and the economy as a whole would probably benefit the most if the banks were able to successfully renegotiate mortgage terms for homeowners in financial crisis. There was a great episode of "This American Life" called "No Map" that discussed the system's inability to do anything but foreclose.
